Utility Trailer FAQs

The right size depends on what you plan to haul, its weight and dimensions, and the towing capacity of your vehicle. Smaller single-axle utility trailers are a good fit for lawn equipment, ATVs and everyday hauling, while larger tandem-axle and heavy-duty trailers offer more capacity for larger equipment and heavier loads. J4 Trailer can help you compare options based on what you need to haul.

A single-axle utility trailer has one axle and is typically lighter, easier to maneuver and well suited for smaller loads. Tandem-axle utility trailers have two axles, providing greater load capacity and stability for heavier equipment and frequent hauling. J4 carries both configurations, including single-axle models around 3,500-lb GVWR and tandem models ranging from 7,000 lbs into heavier-duty configurations.

Payload capacity varies by trailer and is different from GVWR. GVWR is the maximum allowable weight of the trailer and its cargo combined, while payload is the amount the trailer can actually carry after accounting for the trailer's own weight. J4's utility trailer inventory includes models with different axle, GVWR and payload ratings, so always check the specifications of the individual trailer before loading.

Some do. Brake configuration depends on the trailer's size, axle configuration and specifications. For example, some tandem utility trailers at J4 include a braking axle, while heavier-duty models may have brakes on both axles. Check the specifications of the individual trailer or ask J4 which braking setup is appropriate for your towing needs.
